About Us

Lansdown Hall and Gallery is owned by Stroud Town Council and run by an entirely separate charity CIO for the benefit of the community.

Many of the people working at the hall and gallery are volunteers, and the venue operates on a not for profit basis. Money that comes in from hiring the hall or gallery is used to pay for the running of these spaces, for the provision of skilled technical staff at events, and the ongoing maintenance of the venue. Every effort is made to keep the building as affordable for hirers as possible.

The aim of the charity is the provision of hall and gallery space for community use for exhibitions, performances, workshops, film screenings and private functions. Many of Stroud’s festivals use the hall and gallery during the year. The gallery hosts exhibitions from local artists, and there are regular classes as well.

Lansdown Hall is situated at the heart of Stroud just a short walk from the High Street.

Parking

There is a limited amount of on street parking outside Lansdown Hall where you can park for free for up to an hour (plus some designated disabled parking spaces for Blue Badge holders).

There are several pay and display car parks close by, just a short walk away – the nearest is short stay Church Street car park (free after 5pm). For more information on parking Parking near Lansdown Hall

Access

The ground floor Gallery has ramped access with an assistance bell and is fully accessible to all.

The first floor Hall is accessed via a staircase with handrails.

Step free access to the Hall is at the back of the building in Bank Gardens. This can be accessed via the path from the bottom of the High Street.

If you have particular access requirements and you are attending an event in the Hall please contact us in advance and we will make every effort to assist and accommodate you.

Other Information

There are accessible toilets in the Hall next to the bar and in the gallery.

A hearing loop is in place on our P A system.

This is Stroud Rotary 5th year running a Tribute Concert. We always use Lansdown Hall, we are always treated like VIP’S, nothing is too much trouble.

The Hall staff are polite and work with our requirements, they help in every way possible to make our events successful.

Had a birthday celebration here this weekend. Penny the manager is amazing, really helpful and organised; gave us the access we needed to decorate and set up, and then stayed to manhandle chairs and tables! Nothing was too much trouble. The space itself is perfect for a party especially if you are planning to have a Band. Ned the technician has it all covered! We had lovely staff on the evening, bar and duty manager, ensuring everything went smoothly. Really do consider Lansdown as your venue. Highly recommended.

Stroud Rotary Club have now used Lansdown hall for 4 years. We believe it is The best venue for live entertainment in Stroud. Excellent friendly Management and Staff. Nothing too much trouble.

Having exhibited work in a number of West London and Surrey galleries, as well as local Gloucestershire venues, we were delighted to discover the Lansdown Gallery here, in the heart of Stroud. Apart from the beautiful building itself, we were impressed at the light, welcoming and open space appropriate to accommodate any type or size of work. We were impressed too, that staff were encouraging and supportive rather than judgemental, something that most artists have had the misfortune to encounter at some gallery along their career paths. This positive approach makes so much difference to every practising artist. Being well situated, we found that we had a steady stream of visitors most days, and after the long blank days of recent times, it was great fun to meet curious locals, occasional tourists, fellow artists and visitors who were all keen to engage with us about our work.

Lansdown’s clean, flexible and well equipped space with its delightful atmosphere, high ceilings and quirky windows is a hugely important community resource for a town like Stroud, where almost everyone one meets seems to be creative in one way or another. Our Summer Exhibition was a great success and we sold well. We have booked again this November, and have further bookings next year.

I’d like to take this opportunity of thanking Penny who is the boss of this wonderful place. Nothing escapes her eagle eye; she is knowledgeable and efficient, yet her witty humour and seemingly relaxed approach makes us feel she’s a good mate we’ve known for years. I would also like to mention Jessy Plant who helped to curate our exhibition. It was such a pleasure to work with someone so intuitive and well-organized, and who truly works at the speed of light. We are really looking forward to our next exhibitions at Lansdown, and we hope it will remain an integral part of Stroud’s art scene for many years to come.

Having visited the Lansdown Gallery many times, I knew it was the venue where I wanted to hold my Degree Exhibition. The white space inside the beautiful Grade 2 listed building is the perfect place to present work to its best advantage. The people of Stroud are familiar with the gallery and the signage outside and on the high street encourages passers-by to come in. The website provides timely information regarding upcoming events – and I could not have been more pleased with the success of mine. My thanks go to Penny and Jessy, whose support was fundamental in ensuring everything ran smoothly and as stress-free as possible.
